    For your jumps

I feel so great after yesterday’s class. Mistakes were made, combinations were flubbed, entire segments of class were disasters. But in between all that were moments when I felt stronger than ever. If I looked in the right places, I could see clearly where I’ve improved and where I’m growing quickly. And when I saw it, nothing else mattered. That’s what I excitedly wrote on Instagram after Wednesday’s class. The class, however, was off to a rocky start. Barre was pretty rough. Combinations weren’t sticking in my head—especially when we would do an exercise, reverse it, and then repeat the whole thing with arms. By the third and/or fourth time,…

Girl are you ready? It’s gonna be a long (class)

I finally listened to the desperate pleas of my future self and didn’t eat or drink to excess on Sunday. I still had pizza and beer (it’s football season! It’s mandatory!), but I kept my portions reasonable. Was my reward feeling strong, rested, and light on Monday for ballet class? No; my reward was a bunch of stupid cramps. You know how they say one of thing things that can relieve cramping is exercise? I know every woman who ever reads that in some overly-cheerful article is like, uh no thanks, I’m good. But if you can somehow get to a standing position and get yourself to your exercise of…

    2004

Sometimes the classes I miss the most are dancing at CPCC with Katharyn Horne. I believe that’s the only time I’ve been exposed to Cecchetti style and I kind of hated it. Everything was different and weird. I remember randomly taking classes at other schools here and there and how excited I would be to use port de bras during plies at the barre. For some reason I am not finding any breakdowns of a typical Cecchetti class on Google. Might I have to hit the actual library, by moving my actual human body in space? Jeez Louise. Until I do, we must rely on my memories of a time…

They want us to make a symphony out of the sound of women swallowing their own tongues

Yesterday just as I was about to leave work, something happened to upset me. I won’t go into detail since this is my public ballet blog. The main thing you need to know is that, leaving work, I was rattled, upset, worried and more than a little bit angry. I didn’t want to go to ballet class. The last thing I wanted to do was go to a class to practice making my body light and ethereal, to be graceful, to perform slow, controlled movements or light, bouncing steps. What I wanted to do was go for a long, hard run. On the way home, I blasted T-Pain and Le…

    Can’t trust that bourree

I should stop over-eating every single weekend so I don’t feel bloated and sluggish every single Monday. I should, but I probably won’t. I did go to a yoga class on Saturday. I hadn’t done yoga since I started back with ballet. It amused me that I was very sore afterwards—from the waist up! My legs were fine. I guess there aren’t any muscles in the lower body that dancing doesn’t hit. Ballet class on Monday was good once I got going, as usual. There were some new faces. One woman attended who was pretty advanced, but maybe she hadn’t danced in a while. We both struggled to get the…

    Battement you like a hurricane

Wow, hold on to your butts for this class recap because you are in for a wild ride. First of all, I talked, out loud, for several minutes, to a classmate. Yeah. I’ll let you process that for a second. Okay, ready to move on? You’re probably not ready for this. Last night…. there was a boy in class. What was my (a happily coupled, grown-ass woman) reaction when a male human being walked in to the studio? Doing a double take and thinking, “Oh my god it’s a boy.” Of course! Let me back up. A hurricane was speeding through Georgia on its way to the ocean from whence it came,…

Walked In Then I Turn Out

Class on Monday was really good, despite that I had felt somewhat reluctant to even go. I wasn’t seriously considering skipping class, but I wished I hadn’t eaten so much on Sunday or drank so many beers on Saturday. It was definitely a day for slimming black tights. I also kept a tank top on over my leo all class, which I don’t usually do. The first thing I did was test a few plies to see if my right foot/arch was still sore. I felt the slightest soreness in the same place, but other than that it felt fine. I’m very relieved it got better and not worse. Usually,…

Time to go ahead and get *talking about my HOOVES* and *making Center Stage references* out of the way

So… let’s talk about the class I took on Wednesday! This is the “beginner” class as opposed to “beginner/intermediate” but in reality, the two levels are pretty similar. I have to say I like the bit of extra hand-holding we get in the Wednesday class. I mean like the teacher calling out steps, giving heads ups as to which side/step/leg/arm is coming up next… just because it gives you the opportunity to work on technique instead of fatiguing your poor brain with remembering choreography after a long day of work. I’ve decided to make a conscious effort to work on my releves*. I’ve been trying really hard to get as…

  • About Me,  Background

    A brief history of temps

I was trying to figure out exactly how long I’ve ACTUALLY been dancing. How many cumulative years I guess? Hours of my life. I wish I had it documented somehow/somewhere, but all I have is my memory, and unfortunately I interspersed (COMBINED?) periods of intense dancing with periods of intense… how shall we put it… binge drinking. So. Yeah. Unreliable narrator over here. Unreliable curator of my own past. Whoops! FIRST (adult) BALLET CLASS: A wild guess that it was 1999? Earlier? Later? Ok. I was driving to like Pineville or some farflung suburban campus to take class once or twice a week, sort of regularly, for a year or…
